Awards given in homicide group


The unit honored two retiring men.

WARREN — The Trumbull County Homicide Investigation & Prosecution Unit had its annual dinner meeting to celebrate its 25th year and recognize those who assisted the Trumbull County Prosecutor’s Office.

The following were awarded:

UDetective Sgt. Peter Pizzulo and Detective Mike Yannucci of the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office and special agents Ed Carlini, James Ciotti and Brenda Girardi of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation for their work on the criminal case against Jermaine McKinney of Youngstown, convicted in the murders of Wanda Rollyson and her daughter Rebecca Cliburn in Rollyson’s Newton Township home.

UDetectives Michael Currington and Michael Krafcik of the Warren Police Department for their work on the Randal Thomas investigation, which led to a guilty plea by Thomas, of Warren, to aggravated murder in the death of 2-year-old Freddie Miller.

USgt. Martin Gargas, Detective Michael Stabile, Patrolman Dave Webber and Detective Mike Merritt of the Warren Police Department for their work on the Edward Cleer aggravated-vehicular homicide case that resulted in Cleer, of Howland, getting six years in prison for killing Edward E. Haymon by running him over in his car.

UDetective Don Bishop of the Warren Township Police Department for his work on the aggravated-vehicular homicide case against Nakieta Owens of Warren, who received six years in prison for running over Frank S. Rudolph of Hubbard in the parking lot of the Golden Stallion tavern.

UDr. Ted Soboslay, who will retire as Trumbull County coroner at the end of this year, was honored for 20 years of public and forensic service to the county.

UBCI was honored for its “exemplary forensic work and service to law enforcement and justice in Trumbull County.”

UChief Robert Carlson of Newton Falls, who is retiring, was honored for 37 years of service.
