Mount Union 51, Muskingum
NEW CONCORD, Ohio — Senior quarterback Greg Micheli matched his career-high and tossed a season-best four touchdown passes as he went 19-of-25 for 287 yards to lead the offense for Mount Union (3-0, 2-0), which has won 66 straight road games. Micheli’s top target again was junior wide receiver Cecil Shorts who had his third-straight 100-yard receiving performance with 135 yards on five catches and tacked on two more touchdown receptions of 55 and 40 yards. Nate Kmic continued his rise up the NCAA Division III all-time rushing list as he had 21 carries for 181 yards to move into sixth place with 5,785 career rushing yards. His two rushing touchdowns took him to 87 overall which is four shy of NCAA Division III record of 91 by R.J. Bowers of Grove City (Pa.) College.
Thomas More 31, Westminster 10
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. — Thomas More outscored Westminster 21-0 in the second half in a Presidents’ Athletics Conference game. Junior quarterback Kevin Franz completed 27 of 43 passes for 229 yards and a touchdown as he moved into third place on Westminster’s all-time career passing list with 4,812 yards. Franz supplanted Joe Micchia’s total of 4,619 yards from 1987-89 for third place during the game. The game was tied at halftime after junior kicker Fred Romeo (Poland) banked in a 30-yard field goal off the right upright with 9:43 left in the first half.
Mercyhurst 34, Slippery Rock 10
ERIE, Pa. — Richard Stokes rushed for 140 yards and three touchdowns on runs of 4, 2 and 7 yards for Mercyhurst (3-2, 2-0 PSAC-West). Carnell Evans, who gained 44 yards on 10 carries, had the other Mercyhurst touchdown, a 23-yarder late in the fourth quarter. Chris Ryan added field goals of 30 and 39 yards. Slippery Rock (3-2, 1-1) managed only a 21-yard field goal by C.J. Bahr before scoring with less than two minutes left in the game when Jonathan Molnar returned a blocked punt 16 yards for a touchdown. Mercyhurst held Slippery Rock to just 154 yards on offense, and only 94 in the air.
Malone 43, Olivet Nazarene
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — Billy Bob Orsagh completed 14 of 22 passes for 251 yards, a touchdown and no intereceptions to lead Malone (1-1), which led 30-0 at halftime. Maurice Gore carried 15 times for 103 yards and two TDs for the Pioneers, who held a 238-71 advantage on the ground. Orsagh added 51 yards rushing and a TD and Justin Moree had 44 yards on the ground with two TDs. Derek Deardorff caught three passes for 90 yards, including a 66-yard TD from Orsagh. Marshall Fraley rushed for 41 yards to lead Olivet (1-3).
Allegheny 24, Oberlin 13
MEADVILLE, Pa. — Despite being outgained in first downs, passing yards, total offense and time of possession, Allegheny (2-1, 1-0) knocked off visiting (0-3, 0-1) in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Greg Mangan finished the day 22-of-34 for 254 yards, one touchdown and one interception for Allegheny, while Ryan Harvey led the Yeomen in receiving yards as he finished 5-for-91. Mike Loll added seven catches for 57 yards. R. V. Carroll, the reigning NCAC Offensive Player of the Year was held to 81 yards on 23 carries. For the Gators, T.J. Salopek hit 14-of-22 attempts for 132 yards and one touchdown while Jake Vite led the Gators with five receptions for 77 yards and a score. Bobby Burkes (Union) posted three catches for 17 yards.
Quincy 27, Walsh 25
CANTON — Clinton Blossomgame rushed for 189 yards and Corey Williams added 140 for Walsh, which lost its third straight and fell to 1-3 for the first time since 2000. Walsh opened the scoring at the 7:35 mark of the first quarter on Eric Buchanan’s 42-yard field goal. Quincy would then score twice, both on big plays, to take a 14-3 first period lead. Red-shirt freshman quarterback Sam Donatucci connected with James Bailey for a 47-yard score and Mike James for a 41-yard score. Donatucci passed for 347 yards on 27-44. The two teams combined for 25 second quarter points, as Quincy led 24-18 at halftime. Quincy added a 27-yard Alex Beard field goal with 14:49 to play to take a 27-18 lead. Walsh closed to within 27-25 with 1:22 to play when Marc Pullen hit John Rutan for a two-yard score. Walsh’s onside kick attempt failed, and Quincy ran out the clock to earn their first win of the season and first against the Cavs in five tries.
Carnegie Mellon 41, Hiram 6
PITTSBURGH — Carnegie Mellon almost doubled the offense of Hiram, totaling 335 yards to the Terriers’ 178. The Tartans (2-2) had 229 yards on the ground, as Anthony Ruzga led the charge for the fourth straight game with 96 yards and one touchdown. Hiram is 2-1.
