Mecca man who was shot by deputies is recovering

MECCA — A 53-year-old Mecca man is in St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, with three bullet wounds after being shot by Trumbull County deputy sheriffs called to a domestic dispute.
Vincent T. Coburn Jr., of 6067 Hoagland Blackstub Road, was shot around 11 p.m. Wednesday after shooting a firearm out his front door while deputies closed in.
Chief Deputy Ernie Cook said it appears Coburn did not suffer life-threatening wounds, and was sitting up in his hospital bed and talking. Hospital officials were giving no information.
Though no charges have been filed, Coburn is being guarded around the clock, Cook said.
Coburn’s wife, Linda, called police, saying her husband pointed a gun at her head and threatened her. When officers arrived, they spoke to her, required her to leave the area, then went to the back door of the home and talked to Coburn through the locked door. They observed him put a handgun in the back of his pants, then walk to the front door, where he was holding a rifle.
Deputy Brian Kaintz yelled at Coburn to put down the gun, but Coburn fired it instead, causing Kaintz and Deputy Bruce Perry to fire back, a sheriff’s report states. The report isn’t clear on which gun he fired.
Coburn walked back inside as deputies got closer, but returned to the front door again, still holding a gun, and fired again. The two deputies fired back again, and Coburn fell into the doorway. No deputies were injured. Coburn was taken to the hospital, and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation was called to examine the scene and investigate whether all procedures were followed by officers, Cook said.
The Coburns filed for divorce in July.
