Lowellville, East Palestine, Springfield golfers advance to district


BRACEVILLE — Lowellville, East Palestine and Springfield all advanced Wednesday in the Division III boys sectional golf tournament held at Riverview Golf Course.

Those three teams will be joined by three individual qualifiers who were not on a qualifying team. They included Bruce Timko of Warren JFK, Travis Denmeade of Columbiana and Brad Gilanyi of Southington. They will all compete at the Division III district tournament next Thursday at Seven Hills Country Club in North Canton.

Lowellville led the team competition shooting a 325 total behind a 76 from No. 1 man Scott Partika, while Anthony and Joe Alfano each added 81s for the Rockets, who’s other players included Mauro Amendola (87) and Ray Carlson (89).

East Palestine finished six shots back in second place at 331 led by Jeff McKim’s 78, while Springfield was two more shots back at 333 led by Pat Deemer’s 78.

Timko, just a sophomore, was the top individual qualifier as he shot a sizzling 3-under-par 69, but the Eagles finished sixth with 350.

Denmeade, a senior, had a 75 for the Clippers who were a close fourth, just missing the final spot in the team competition with a 337 total.

Gilanyi, a senior, had a 78 to lead Southington, which finished seventh at 353.

Bristol’s John Williams also shot a 78, but lost out to Gilanyi in a playoff. Bristol finished fifth in the team competition with a 343 total.
