WEST FARMINGTON — An infant and adult were taken to St. Joseph Health Center for treatment for burns they suffered in a house fire.

Fire crews responded to an explosion at 385 N. Main St. at 6:06 p.m. Wednesday, according to an official with Trumbull County emergency services.

The fire was extinguished by 7:10 p.m., when crews cleared the scene, according to a report.

No other details on the condition of the victims or home have been released.

Man faces many charges

BOARDMAN — A Warren man faces charges of robbery, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Corey Davis, 31, of Starlight Street Northwest, also had warrants for his arrest from the Portage County Sheriff’s office for failure to appear on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon and from the Trumbull Sheriff’s office for failure to appear on citation for driving under suspension.

He is in Mahoning County Jail.

Police were called around 1 p.m. Tuesday to TJ Max & More on Boardman-Canfield Road, where a store employee said video showed Davis removing the price tag from a purse, concealing it in his coat and leaving the store without paying for it.

When the store employee approached Davis outside, Davis fought with him and tried to run away, but the employee and a citizen who witnessed the altercation were able to catch him.

Police found a knife with the blade extended in Davis’ coat pocket. They also found a suspected crack pipe in a pocket of a purse Davis was carrying.

Man accused of beating boy

SHARON, Pa. — A city man has been charged in the beating of an 11-year-old boy, police report.

The boy was a relative, said Police Chief Michael Menster.

Charged with simple assault and endangering the welfare of a child is John Speelman Sr., 37, of South Irvine Avenue.

Menster said the boy had bruises on his head and arms after being beaten Sunday.

Speelman was arrested Wednesday.

Children and Youth Services was notified, Menster said. Four children living at Speelman’s home, ranging in age from 8 months to 11, have been removed.

S. Range groundbreaking

NORTH LIMA — The South Range School District will break ground on its new kindergarten-through-12th-grade building at noon Saturday on the site, 11300 state Route 46 in Beaver Township.

The community is invited to the ceremony, conducted by Superintendent Dennis Dunham, Treasurer Jim Phillips, school board members and the project’s construction manager.

The building is expected to be completed and a move-in is scheduled for August 2010, with three separate areas for the high school, junior high and elementary school.

The building will sit on 60 acres along Route 46 and Green Beaver Road.

District voters approved borrowing $18.3 million through the sale of bonds to pay the local share of the cost. The state’s share of nearly $20 million represents 52 percent of the total cost.

Grant for Help Hotline

YOUNGSTOWN — Help Hotline Crisis Center Inc. has been awarded a $5,000 grant by the Kennedy Family Foundation, which is under the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley. The grant will be used by The Victims of Crime Program at the crisis center.

The program provides support, outreach and hot line services to the victims of crime and their families.

Man resentenced

MERCER, Pa. — A judge in Mercer County Common Pleas Court earlier this week resentenced Bruce Graban of Tremble Avenue, Campbell, to 109 days to 11 months in Mercer County Jail.

According to court documents, Graban had been placed on probation Aug. 29, 2007, for misdemeanor theft by unlawful taking for theft of a clock and some jewelry.

He violated that probation by committing a new criminal mischief offense in the county to which he pleaded guilty in July.
