McDonald boys, Maplewood girls win Trumbull crowns

BROOKFIELD — The McDonald High boys and Maplewood girls won championships at the Trumbull County cross country meet Tuesday at Brookfield Community Park.

Lance Ronghi of the Blue Devils placed third in 17 minutes, 7 seconds in leading his team to the title.

Tyler Ames (16:46) won the run while Heath Harris (16:56) finished second, helping the Bulldogs to a second-place finish with 53 points.

Lisa Yoder (21:22) took individual honors, winning the 5000 meters in leading Maplewood to the team crown with 33 points.

The Rockets’ Crystal Williams (21:50), Becca Eischman (21:54) and Tara Knight (22:11) placed fourth, fifth and 11th, respectively.

Sara Bonar (21:36) of Badger placed second while Ashley Maylar of Girard (21:44) was third. McDonald finished second with 56 points.

Paige Eckman (22:03) of the Blue Devils was ninth.

Chick wins by one second

EAST PALESTINE — David Chick of East Palestine managed to survive strong competition from two other runners at the finish line to win the boys race at the Columbiana County cross country meet at East Palestine City Park.

Chick covered the course in 17 minutes, 23 seconds to edge Joe Karmanzin (17:24) of United and Nathan Grimm (17:28) of Leetonia in a closely contested battle.

East Liverpool, led by Matt McGuire who finished sixth in 18:28, won the boys team championship. United was second with 63.

Reinforcing McGuire were teammates Jake Boyer, ninth, 18:55; Josh Coil, 10th, 18:58; Tim Densmore, 11th, 19:00; and Sean Densmore, 15th, 19:18.

In the girls race, Stephanie Case of Columbiana won by a big margin with 20:43 over Leighann Kelvington of East Palestine (21:12).

Salem had the next three places — Lauren Shivers, third, 21:26; Bethany Huston, fourth, 21:29, and Lexi Shivers, fifth, 22:08 to win the girls team crown. United was second with 41.

Also scoring for Salem were Gabby Shivers, 12th, 22:33; and Alexis Thorne, 15th, 22:45.
