American Red Cross seeks blood donors

The American Red Cross is urging all who are eligible to give blood to find an Urgent Recovery blood drive near them and donate as soon as possible. The special blood drives are being conducted throughout the 19 counties served by ARC’s Northern Ohio Blood Services Region.

The windstorm that swept through the area last week not only knocked out power for thousands of residents, it delivered a blow to the local blood supply by causing a low turnout of donors to blood drives, Red Cross officials said.

Northern Ohio Blood Services Region, which serves 19 counties, including Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull, said the supply of blood is below minimum inventory levels on seven of the eight blood types, with types O Negative, O Positive and B Negative in an emergency state at below a half-day’s supply.

The Red Cross is asking eligible blood donors to call (800) 448-3543 or visit RedCrossDonor.org to find a blood drive. Blood donors must be at least 17, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health and present a valid state-issued photo ID or a Red Cross donor card upon donation.

Student assaulted

WARREN — A 17-year-old student was assaulted by an 18-year-old woman while the victim was getting off her school bus, she told police.

The victim said she knew the girl who hit her with brass knuckles several times in the head at the corner of Northwest Boulevard and Landsdown Avenue Northwest at 2:30 p.m. Monday.

The victim said the 18-year-old followed her bus in another vehicle before attacking her as she was leaving the bus.

The victim received treatment at the St. Joseph Minor Emergency & Diagnostic Center on Tod Place Northwest.

Dawn Marzano, director of communications for Warren city schools, said the school district was unaware of the incident.
