Softball clinic

CANFIELD SEmD The YSU softball program kicked off its annual Hit-A-Home Run Through Recycling Drive with a free youth clinic at McCune Park.

More than 50 student-athletes in grades 8-12 participated in the clinic in which athletes worked on throwing, fielding and hitting fundamentals.

Golf takes 10th

LEMONT, ILL. — The YSU men’s golf team finished in tenth place at the three-round John Dallio Memorial Tournament at Ruffled Feathers Golf Course.

The Penguins shot an 897 (305-294-298), 24 strokes behind Nova Southeastern which won the event in a tie-breaker with Southern Illinois.

Tim Morrow finished in fourth place with a 215 (72-72-71).

Summerfield selected

HIRAM — Hiram College volleyball player Taylor Summerfield (Howland High) was named this week’s North Coast Athletic Conference Player-of-the Week.

The Terriers beat The College of Wooster and Defiance.

Summerfield recorded a combined 16 kills and had a .424 hitting percentage. She led the team in set assists with 54 (6.00 assists per game) to go along with 14 digs and two service aces.

Volleyball officials

NORTH JACKSON — The Mahoning Valley Volleyball Officials Association will hold its annual social and awards presentation Sunday at Dino’s Restaurant at 6:30 p.m.

The awards for 25 years of service will be given to Pat Gaia, Lou Cerimele and Glen Windram.

McDONALD — The McDonald Board of Education on Monday approved hiring these people as coaches: Steve Durbin, assistant football coach, volunteer; Josh Krumpak, assistant cross country coach, volunteer; Bill Walker, assistant cross country coach, and Cindy Green, girls head softball coach.

Prep football poll

COLUMBUS — The third weekly Associated Press football poll will be released this evening.

Many games in the Columbus City League were postponed over the weekend until Monday evening due to power outages caused by remnants of Hurricane Ike causing the one-day delay in the poll.

New franchise set

TOLEDO — Toledo Arena Sports says it has acquired an arena football franchise and the team will begin playing in the spring of 2010.

The nonprofit group said Monday that the expansion arenafootball2 team, which hasn’t been named, will be part of what is now a 28-team league in 18 states. In Ohio, Youngstown also has a team.

The league just completed its ninth season. It brings arena football to midsize markets and feeds players and coaches to the Arena Football League.

Toledo Arena Sports was formed to own and operate the new franchise that will play in the Lucas County Downtown Arena.

Penguins win, 3-2

TAMPA, Fla. — Tyler Kennedy scored a tiebreaking power-play goal early in the third period to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning in a preseason game on Monday night.

Kristopher Letang added a goal and an assist for the Penguins. Maxime Talbot had the other Pittsburgh goal.

Pittsburgh goalies Dany Sabourin and John Curry combined to stop 37 shots.

Notre Dame arrests

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Prosecutors will review police reports before deciding whether to file formal charges against Notre Dame tight end Will Yeatman and center Mike Golic Jr., son of an ESPN television host. They were among nearly 40 people arrested on preliminary alcohol charges at a weekend party.

Police reports could be filed, but the prosecutor’s office did not know how quickly decisions on charges would be made.

Yeatman, 20, faced preliminary charges of consumption of alcohol by a minor, false informing and resisting arrest, while Golic, 18, faced a preliminary charge of consumption of alcohol by a minor, Police Sgt. William Redman said.
