YSU'S Wilson steps up after Jarvis goes down

YOUNGSTOWN — When Youngstown State senior De’Angelo Wilson saw his good friend and teammate Jarvis Richards go down with an injury in the closing seconds of last Saturday’s 32-24 victory over North Dakota State, he was heartbroken, but he knew that it was up to him to go into the game and help the Penguins hang on to win the game.

On the very next play, Wilson was right in the middle of the action and he intercepted a Bison pass in the end zone that preserved the victory for the Penguins and improved their record to 2-2 on the year and 1-1 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

“It was difficult watching Jarvis go down and seeing that his injury appeared to be a serious one,” Wilson said. “We’ve been very close the past year and a half and it was just like watching a member of your family go down.”

“I knew that I had to step up for him and the team and I was just fortunate to be in the right place at the right time and made the play,” he added.

A week ago Wilson was named the Missouri Valley Conference special teams players of the game returning four punts for a total of 95 yards, including a 39-yard return for a touchdown.
