Wilson selected

ST. LOUIS — YSU cornerback De’Angelo Wilson was named defensive player of the week for his role in the Penguins’ 32-24 football victory over North Dakota State.

Hall, a 5-foot-10, 195-pound senior from Sacramento, Calif., intercepted a pass in the end zone with 22 seconds remaining to seal YSU’s win.

It was his second interception of the game; the first one set up the Penguins’ first touchdown of the game.

Wilson also blocked a field goal in the second quarter.

Northern Iowa quarterback Pat Grace was named offensive player of the week, and his teammate, punter Brook Black, was named special teams player of the week.

Babbaro in action

VILLANOVA, Pa. — Former Canfield athlete Angelo Babbaro had a part in Villanova’s 20-14 overtime victory over Penn on Saturday.

Babbaro rushed five times for 28 and caught three passes for 10 yards.

Sectional golf starts today

The Division II boys and girls sectional golf tournaments are scheduled for today.

Playing at the Candywood Country Club course at 8 a.m. will be boys representing Brookfield, Campbell, Mooney, Champion, Garrettsville, Girard, Hubbard, LaBrae, Lakeview, Liberty, Newton Falls, Salem, Southeast, South Range, Struthers, United, Ursuline and West Branch.

Playing at Pine Lake Golf Course at 8 a.m. will be girls representing Mooney, Champion, Crestview, Hubbard, Jackson-Milton, Jefferson Area, Lakeview, Leetonia, Lowellville, Maplewood, Poland, Pymatuning Valley, Salem, Sebring, Southeast, Southington, South Range, Struthers and Ursuline.

Jones honored

YOUNGSTOWN — Ursuline High’s Allen Jones was selected the Steel Valley Conference football player of the week for his action in the 41-0 win over Chardon on Friday.

Jones ran five times for 117 yards including touchdowns of 16 and 47 yards for the Irish (5-0).

DeFrank on card

GIRARD — Alecia DeFrank of Girard will fight Brittany Fisher of West Virginia as part of a 20-bout amateur fight card at McMenamy’s in Niles on Oct. 11.

DeFrank improved to 9-4 after her latest fight in Zanesville, where she stopped Kelly Daniels of Hilliard in the first round of a 125-pound match.

DeFrank is scheduled to step into the ring against Fisher at 119 pounds. Fisher (10-2) is a two-time West Virginia Golden Gloves champion.

The McMenamy card, which is being promoted by Chuck Nelson and Chuck Haskle, begins at 7 p.m.

FC Dallas tops Fire

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — Jeff Cunningham scored two goals and had an assist Sunday to lead FC Dallas to a 4-1 win over the Chicago Fire.

Andre Rocha sent a freekick into the box, which led to confusion. Cunningham found the loose ball and knocked in the rebound for a 1-0 lead. Cunningham also scored the last goal for Dallas in the 61st minute.

Aaron Pitchkolan and Bruno Guarda scored the other goals for FC Dallas.

Brian McBride scored the lone goal for the Fire in the 90th minute. Justin Mapp crossed the ball into the box. McBride jumped up and headed it into the net.

The Fire hadn’t allowed more than two goals in a game since Aug. 22, 2007.

Fifth Avenue Mile

NEW YORK — Olympic bronze medalist Nick Willis of New Zealand outleaned American Olympian Bernard Lagat to win the Continental Airlines Fifth Avenue Mile on Sunday.

Willis finished in 3 minutes, 50.5 seconds to edge Lagat by 0.1 seconds.

Great Britain Olympian Lisa Dobrisky beat American Olympian Shannon Rowbury to become the race’s first British champion since Paula Radcliffe in 1997.

Dobrisky (4:18.6) and Rowbury (4:19.2) had the race’s second- and third-fastest times ever.

Lagat went out quickly and led the pack at the halfway mark in 1:52. Willis, who was third in the 1,500 meters in Beijing, fought back in the closing meters to win his first race this year.
