YSU Notebook \ From the Ice Castle

Streak alive: YSU senior kicker Brian Palmer, a Mineral Ridge High grad, kicked field goals of 18 and 40 yards against North Dakota State. The kicks extended his consecutive streak to 13 straight dating back to last season. He is 3-for-3 this year and holds the YSU record for consecutive field goals. He broke the mark previously held by Jeff Wilkins of 10 last year when he made his final 11 in a row.

Last happened: De’Angelo Wilson blocked a NDS field goal attempt in the second quarter. Wilson also blocked the last field goal for the Penguins when he blocked one a year ago against Southern Utah. The last time the Penguins had two running backs go over 100 yard rushing mark was also a year ago when YSU tailbacks Jabari Scott and Kevin Smith each cracked the total against Indiana State.

Real crowd: Last week when the Penguins played their home opener against Central State the announced crowd was more than 14,000, while fewer than half showed up for the game. Saturday the crowd was 14,331 and it looked like they all showed up to root the Penguins to victory.

Defensive leaders: Senior cornerback just might be the Missouri Valley Football Conference defensive player of the week, one week after winning the special teams award. The Sacramento, Calif., native had two interceptions, the second in the final seconds to save the victory, blocked a field goal, had three tackles and another pass breakup for the night. Sophomore free safety Andre Elliott led the Penguins with 11 tackles, while sophomore safety Brandian Ross finished with nine tackles and an interception, Ross and sophomore defensive end Nick Mernedakis had the only tackles for losses, while junior defensive end Jamie Frasure had an interception that he returned for 27 yards.

Up next: The Penguins will play their third straight home game next Saturday when they entertain Liberty in a 6 p.m. kickoff at Stambaugh Stadium. The Flames (2-0) were idle Saturday.
