Power outage delays asbestos removal

COLUMBIANA — Fairfield Township officials said asbestos removal at the building next to the township government center was delayed because of last week’s power outage that hit the area in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike.

Architect Mike Fagan of Olsavsky & Jaminet, Youngstown, recently advised township trustees he will not advertise for bids for the building’s demolition until the abatement is within two weeks of completion.

A site abatement meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday to discuss the progress of the abatement project, he noted.

The township is looking to raze the structure that once served as a school building once the asbestos removal is finished.

In other news, road Supervisor Dennis Farmer announced that the township is accepting bids on excess equipment the township owns. That includes a 1988 GMC dump truck with a 10-foot snowplow and a 1965 Allis Chalmers 545 rubber-tired loader plus various engines, plows and pipes. For a complete list of items offered for bid, visit www.fairfieldtownship-ohio.com, or call (330) 482-2695 to have the list mailed.

Bids will be accepted until 5 p.m. Oct. 1, and all sealed bids must be mailed to Fairfield Township, Attn.: Pat Hoffmaster, Fiscal Officer, 3201 State Route 164, Leetonia 44431.

Bids will be opened at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 2 during the regular trustees meeting at the government center.
