Westminster 31, Saint Vincent 24
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — The Westminster College football team scored three unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter to propel past Saint Vincent at Harold Burry Stadium. The Titans outgained the Bearcats, 375-293, including rushing yard advantages of 132-87 and passing totals of 243-206. Junior quarterback Kevin Franz threw for over 200 yards for a third straight game as he completed 22 of 38 passes for 243 yards and a touchdown. Westminster junior wide receiver Jon Gubish tied a career and season with six catches and set a new career high with 91 receiving yards.
Mount Union 44, Ohio Northern
ALLIANCE — Mount Union outscored Ohio Northern 20-0 in the third quarter to pull away. Purple Raider quarterback Greg Micheli torched ON’s secondary, completing 23 of 25 passes for 323 yards and three touchdowns. Nate Kmic added 89 yards rushing on 25 carries for the Purple Raiders (2-0, 1-0), who entered the game ranked first in Division III. Ohio Northern (0-2, 0-1) was 25th. Cecil Shorts caught seven passes for 108 yards for MU.
Grove City 41, Bethany 35
GROVE CITY, Pa. — Brian Mercer rushed 29 times for 126 yards and four TDs, including the game-winner from 2 yards out with 1:59 left as Grove City rallied for a 35-33 deficit to topple Bethany. Andrew DiDonato completed 14 of 24 passes for 186 yards for Grove City (2-1, 1-0), which outscored Bethany 8-0 in the second half to clinch the victory. Chad Smith completed 15 of 22 passes for 193 yards, two interceptions and two TDs for Bethany (1-2, 0-1).
Hiram 45, Kenyon 39
GAMBIER, Ohio — Senior two-time All-NCAC quarterback Trevor Henderson threw for 342 yards and scored a total of five touchdowns (two passing and three rushing) as Hiram recorded its second straight win of the season, and second straight victory in overtime in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener. Sophomore wide receiver Steve Hammond had a career-high 103 reception yards to go along with a TD. Hiram (2-0, 1-0) is off to its best start since 2001. The Terriers also began the 2001 season with back-to-back wins defeating Bluffton College and the College of Mount St. Joseph. The victory also marked the third time in school history that Hiram opened NCAC play with a win since joining the conference in 2000. The last time occurred during the 2005 season when Hiram defeated Earlham (Ind.) College, 7-2, and also during the 2000 season against Kenyon, 42-34. The Lords fall to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the NCAC following today’s loss to Hiram.
