Shortage of parts leads to cancellation of overtime

LORDSTOWN — A shortage of parts caused General Motors to cancel two shifts that were scheduled to work overtime today at its Lordstown complex.

There are enough parts to continue running weekday production normally, said Chris Lee, a GM spokesman. Extra shifts could be added Sept. 27 if the parts supply is adequate, he said. Lee would not discuss what part is involved.

New York Times reporter to speak about new book

YOUNGSTOWN — Steve Greenhouse, labor reporter for The New York Times, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the President’s Suite in Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University. The program is sponsored by the university’s journalism program and labor studies program.

Greenhouse will discuss his new book, “The Big Squeeze: Tough Times for the American Worker,” which describes the stresses and strains facing all working Americans and explains the economic, political and social trends shaping work life.

E. Palestine chamber schedules meeting

EAST PALESTINE — East Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce has scheduled its next monthly meeting for 7 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Masonic Lodge, 21 North Market St., upstairs. Reservations for the session may be made by contacting the chamber at (330) 426-2128.

Canfield Metal Coating agrees to pay fine to OEPA

CANFIELD — Canfield Metal Coating Corp. has agreed to pay a $10,300 fine to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA said the company promptly addressed hazardous-waste violations at its plant at 460 W. Main St., and is in compliance with state laws.

The EPA said the company had stored a container of hazardous waste longer than 90 days without a permit. Other violations included failing to meet requirements for the accumulation of waste chromic acid liquid, not keeping containers of hazardous waste closed and not having a training program that included a waste contingency program. The EPA said it did not observe any releases of hazardous waste.
