Holmes makes debut

NEW YORK — Katie Holmes made her Broadway debut in “All My Sons” Thursday night, and her husband Tom Cruise thought it was a knockout.

Hundreds of people bought tickets to see Holmes act on Broadway for the first time in a preview performance for the revival of “All My Sons,” co-starring John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest and Patrick Wilson.

The audience collectively gasped when Cruise entered the Schoenfeld Theatre moments before the curtain went up. He mingled with some other theatergoers and hugged Dustin Hoffman, who was sitting a few rows away.

Wroblewski’s novel gets nod from Oprah

NEW YORK — Thanks to Oprah Winfrey, one of the summer’s hottest reads is sure to sizzle in the fall.

Publishing’s biggest hitmaker has chosen David Wroblewski’s “The Story of Edgar Sawtelle,” a 500-page debut novel, as her latest book club pick, two booksellers told The Associated Press. “Edgar Sawtelle” was released in June and became a smash thanks to strong reviews, word of mouth and a blurb from Stephen King.

“Edgar Sawtelle,” which Wroblewski worked on for more than a decade, is the story of a mute boy who communicates best with his dogs. Wroblewski grew up in rural Wisconsin.
