Scouting report: W&J beat Frostburg State last Saturday, 49-21, while Thiel was blanked by Albion, 16-0. W&J was led by senior QB Bobby Swallow (West Branch), who completed 29 of 39 passes for 391 yards and three TDs, and was named PAC Offensive Player of the Week. Craig Besong caught 10 passes for 138 yards and one TD, Luke Espe eight for 82 yards, David Ravida four for 62 yards and one TD and Ryan Church three for 69 yards and one TD. Thiel’s offense was stymied as Albion enjoyed a 303-137 total yards advantage. But junior DT William Haase had a game-high eight tackles with one sack and 3.5 tackles for losses. QB Willie Bova passed for 106 yards, 54 of them going to junior R Brendan Taylor, including a 28-yard connection.

Scouting report: St. Vincent rallied from a 20-3 second-quarter deficit to edge Gallaudet last Saturday, 23-22, for its first win since re-establishing its intercollegiate football program, while Westminster inaugurated its renovated stadium with a 6-2 win over Allegheny. Westminster scored its game-winning TD on junior TB Nick Mokolosky’s 1-yard run with 1:43 left in the game to cap an eight play, 79-yard drive , after Allegheny had scored a safety on a bad center snap that went out of the end zone. Senior CB Kiel Wolf, senior LB Jake Martinez and sophomore SS Daniel Joyce each had seven tackles for the Titans.

OHIO NORTHERN (0-1) VS. MOUNT UNION (1-0)

Scouting report: Ohio Northern lost its season opener last Saturday to North Central (Ill.), 20-3, while Mount Union was off last Saturday. MUC is ranked No. 1, ONU No. 25. The Purple Raiders are coming off a bye week after beating then No. 10 St. John Fisher (N.Y.) , 33-3, two weeks ago. Ohio Northern committed five turnovers which cost the then-No. 16 Polar Bears a 20-3 setback to No. 15 North Central (Ill.) last Saturday. The MUC-ONU series dates back to Thanksgiving Day in 1907 when Mount Union rolled to a 52-0 win. The Purple Raiders have won two-straight meetings after Ohio Northern’s 21-14 win in 2005 in Alliance. Prior to that, MUC had won 20 straight games.

Scouting report: Hiram was off last week while Kenyon posted a 39-36 victory over Chicago. The Saturday before last, Hiram scored a 20-14 overtime victory over Gallaudet University in the season opener in Washington D.C. The victory ended a 26-game winless streak dating to the 2005 season. Hiram freshman LB Jon Hull has been named the North Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Week for his performance against Gallaudet. He had seven tackles (all solo stops) including a tackle for loss, a fumble recovery, a fumble forced and two pass breakups. Hull helped the Hiram defense hold the Gallaudet offense to just 89 total yards for the game (seven rushing and 82 passing) and a 1.4 yards per play average.

BETHANY (1-1, 0-0 PAC) VS. GROVE CITY (1-1, 0-0 PAC)

Scouting report: Bethany beat Kentucky Christian last Saturday, 34-29, while Grove City defeated Carnegie Mellon, 19-10. Freshman RB Eric Walker scored two fourth-quarter TDs as Bethany scored 20 unanswered points in the final period to rally past Kentucky Christian. Walker finished with 76 yards and his first two career touchdowns. Freshman K-P Chris Haley kicked two FGs of 22 and 30 yards and punted five times for a 37.0-yard average and was named PAC Special Teams Player of the Week.

GANNON (2-1) VS. SLIPPERY ROCK (2-1)

Scouting report: Gannon beat Cheyney, 40-18, while Slippery Rock scored a 38-24 win over Kutztown. The Rock capitalized on six Kutztown turnovers to tally 24 points. The Rock (2-1) parlayed six Kutztown (1-2) turnovers into 24 points en route to the win in the home opener Saturday night at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Lehmeier rushed for 201 yards and two TDs to lead The Rock, and was named PSAC-Western Division Offensive Player of the Week.
