In 2007, 8.1 million Americans were victims of identity theft.

YOUNGSTOWN — The Better Business Bureau will host its second “Secure Your ID Day” on Saturday.

The event at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Chevrolet Centre on Front Street encourages consumers and businesses to properly dispose of documents by shredding them, said Melissa Padisak, director of marketing and public relations.

The first event was held in June and was so successful the BBB set up a second date, Padisak said.

“Consumers are now aware of the impact of shredding sensitive paper documents, and due to the demand, the Better Business Bureau is holding the second shredding event for 2008,” said Patricia Rose, president of the BBB. “BBB experts will also be distributing important advice and simple steps everyone can take to prevent ID theft in their daily lives, both online and off.”

In 2007, 8.1 million Americans fell victim to identity theft, which resulted in a loss of $45 billion, according to a 2008 report from Javlin Strategy and Research.

Citing the report, the BBB release added that 56 percent of the theft was caused by direct contact with the victim’s personal information, including the retrieving of personal documents.

Participants are encouraged to bring documents for shredding. There is a limit of five boxes or bags of documents. Tips for proper disposal will also be available to take home.

The event is sponsored by Shred It, WKBN, WYFX, Chevrolet Centre, Time Warner Cable, Green Team, Youngstown State University Hockey, Phantoms Hockey and Streetscape.
