GREENVILLE, Pa. — A utility worker from New Jersey who was in the area helping to repair power lines was killed when he stepped on a live wire, state police in Mercer reported.

Robert Lempke, 43, of Columbia, N.J., was working with a crew off Pew Road in Delaware Township, Mercer County, when the accident happened at 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Lempke, an employee of New Jersey Central Power and Light, was taken to UPMC Greenville where he was pronounced dead, state police said.

Holocaust survivor to speak

YOUNGSTOWN — Cantor Moshe Taube, a Holocaust survivor saved by Oskar Schindler, whose humanitarian efforts were chronicled in the movie “Schindler’s List,” will speak at 12:30 p.m. today in McKay Auditorium in Beeghly Hall at Youngstown State University.

Child safety seat checkups

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania State Police in Lawrence and Mercer County barracks will offer free child passenger safety seat checkups as part of the department’s participation in National Child Passenger Safety Week, unday through Sept. 27. The checkups are designed to teach parents the proper installation and use of child safety seats.

Fund set up for couple

HOWLAND — The family of a couple whose trailer burned while they were on their honeymoon Sept. 5 has set up a trust fund for the couple.

Bill and Jean Wooldridge were getting home from their honeymoon when the fire started, said Bill’s mother, Barbara Wooldridge of Warren.

Barbara Wooldridge said Bill, 34, and Jean, 45, lost everything in the fire except the clothing they took with them. The home was a total loss. Firefighters said the cause of the fire was undetermined.

A macaw and a puppy died in the fire, which left the home on Basswood Avenue in Howland a total loss. Basswood is off of North River Road near North Park Avenue.

Barbara Wooldridge said the couple had renter’s insurance but nothing that would pay for replacement of the trailer.

Rolling Cash 5 winner

YOUNGSTOWN — A Lawrence County resident had the other winning ticket that matched all five numbers in the $110,000 Rolling Cash 5 game Sept. 4. David C. Stelts of Edinburg, Pa., won $55,000.

After mandatory federal and state taxes totaling 31 percent, Stelts will receive a check for $37,950.

He purchased the winning Rolling Cash 5 ticket at Quaker Village, 201 S. Lincoln Ave., Salem. He used the auto pick. The winning numbers were 3-14-19-26-32.

Jewelry disappears

WARREN — Thom Duma Jewelers, 115 West Market Street, reported that a white gold chain and 2-carat diamond necklace, combined value of $2,398, disappeared after they were sent to a customer in Texas through a private shipping company.

The package arrived in Texas on Aug. 18 with the contents missing, the jeweler reported. The box appeared to be tampered with, a police report filed Monday said.

Woman reports robbery

WARREN — A Duke Street Southeast woman reported that two men walked into her apartment through the front door around 9 p.m. Monday wearing masks over their faces and holding pistols and took cash.

The woman said she and a man were watching television when the robbery occurred.

After taking about $78 and a bank card, they demanded more money and threatened to kill the man and woman. One of the assailants searched the bedroom but found no more money. They fled back out the front door.

Presentation on tax

YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning County Auditor Michael V. Sciortino and Carol L. McFall, the county’s chief deputy auditor, gave a one-hour presentation Wednesday on calculating and forecasting property tax and millage at a financial officers conference here. They addressed more than 100 Ohio finance officers at the Ohio Government Finance Officers Association’s fall conference in Aurora, which began Wednesday and ends Friday.

Arrested man has warrants

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Police arrested a man working on a construction project at Westminster College after they discovered two outstanding traffic warrants for him.

Police said Gregory P. Toner Jr., 26, of Butler, Pa., caught the attention of college public safety officers after his pickup truck drifted out of a parking space and into a building at the college.

New Wilmington police were notified and found the warrants. One was from Edinboro on a 2006 violation for driving under suspension. He also was wanted in Freedom, Pa., on a speeding violation in 2005.

New Wilmington police cited Toner with driving under suspension.

He is scheduled for a hearing Monday before District Magistrate Scott McGrath.

Investigating fatal crash

NORTH LIMA — The Hiram Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that involved a tractor-trailer and a pedestrian.

It occurred about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in Springfield Township westbound on the Ohio Turnpike.

Charles E. Kersey, 52, of Massillon was westbound when his vehicle struck a pedestrian who was in the roadway, the patrol said.

Allen M. Brockett, 41, of Toledo was killed.

The highway patrol did not say why Brockett was in the roadway and the crash is still under investigation.
