TRIAL UPDATE | Jurors ask to see bus camera video

YOUNGSTOWN — Deliberations began about 12:45 p.m. in the trial of two people charged in the robbery and attempted murder of the manager of a South Avenue fast food restaurant.

Shortly after, jurors requested to see a videotape captured by a WRTA bus camera showing the accident that started the crimes.

Taran Helms, 23, and Hattie Gilbert, 20, are each charged with attempted murder, aggravated robbery, felonious assault and kidnapping in the March 24 shooting that left Joseph Kaluza, 43, paralyzed.

Testimony began Monday before Judge Timothy E. Franken of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Kaluza was the first witness.

Authorities have said that Gilbert staged an accident with Kaluza after he left the restaurant with the bank deposit. Helms then shot him, moved the car to a side street and robbed him of the $300 deposit, they have said.
