Seeking info on fire

AUSTINTOWN— The township fire department is asking local residents help gathering information about a recent motor home fire.

On Sept. 6, while responding to an RV fire on Oakwood Avenue, firefighters saw a person wearing a black Oakland Raiders jacket leaving the area on a dark-colored dirt bike.

The report says this person, who they believe intentionally started the fire, fled at high speed toward North Dunlap Avenue, on the West Side of Youngstown.

Anyone who may have information should contact the Austintown Fire Department Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at (330) 799-8502.

Green Party candidate

LISBON — A congressional candidate has moved from a write-in status to a Green Party candidate.

Dennis S. Spisak of Struthers filed recently to run for U.S. representative of the 6th Congressional District.

Democrat U.S. Rep. Charlie Wilson of St. Clairsville is the incumbent. He’s opposed by Republican Richard Stobbs of Dillonvale.

Spisak was able to show proof to the Columbiana County Board of Elections that he was named the 6th District candidate of the Green Party.

The Green Party is a grass-roots activist party working for social change, says its Web site.

The Ohio Secretary of State’s Office had said that if Spisak could prove he was named as a candidate in the U.S. House race by the Green Party, his name would go on the ballot along with the other two candidates’ names.

Apartment catches fire

AUSTINTOWN— A third-floor Westchester Square apartment caught fire after the tenant left a pan burning on the stove.

Just after 4 p.m. Monday, the Austintown Fire Department was called to extinguish the blaze on Westchester Drive.

Lori Koch, building manager, said the fire was contained to just one apartment in the 60-unit complex.

“It’s not a total loss,” she said. Koch said all other tenants are still in their apartments, and business is running as usual.

According to the fire report, residents were evacuated, gas fans were set up on the third floor to ventilate smoke from the building, and damages totaled $5,000.

No one was injured, and the tenant is staying with a friend until his unit is repaired.

Picking up storm debris

BOARDMAN — The township will pick up branches and woody storm debris through Friday.

Today’s pickup will be in the northeast quadrant of the township, or streets north of U.S. Route 224 and east of Market Street.

Friday’s pickup will be streets south of Route 224.

All branches and woody debris should be no longer than 5 to 6 feet and less than 10 inches in diameter. Residents should place all branches and woody debris parallel with the curb out by the edge of the road and the road department will try and get to as many homes as possible.

The township will be applying for a reimbursement from the state for the cost of the pickup.
