Cemetery lantern tours will be given in Mercer

MERCER, Pa. — For its October program, the Mercer County Historical Society’s Civil War Roundtable will present the third annual Lantern Light Walking Tours of Mercer’s cemeteries.

The tours are set for Oct. 15, 22 and 29.

Bill Philson, MCHS executive director, will lead the tours, focusing on various aspects of the Civil War and the Underground Railroad.

Tour groups will depart at 7 p.m. from the society’s headquarters at 119 S. Pitt St., and will return around 9 p.m.

Take a lantern or a flashlight, and be prepared to walk more than 1 1⁄2 miles. Those who cannot walk that distance will be able to meet the group at various stops.

Donations will be accepted to benefit the Old Mercer Cemetery and the Western Pennsylvania Civil War Re-enactors Society.

In case of inclement weather, check the Web site, www.mchspa.org. If that happens, a program will be presented at the society’s headquarters.
