YSU women’s golf team wins weather-shortened tournament

Katie Rogner’s 73 was the second lowest 18-hole round in the school’s history.

HUBBARD — Monday’s final round of the YSU Invitational was canceled because of course conditions, allowing the Youngstown State women’s golf team and Katie Rogner to earn first-place finishes.

Weather was an issue at the event as the second round of the tournament was canceled because of heavy rainfall on the course as well as debris due to heavy winds from Sunday night.

As a team, the Penguins shot a total of 313. Rogner’s score of 73, which included three birdies, tied for the second-lowest 18-hole round in school history.

In second place, six strokes behind Rogner, was YSU freshman Samantha Formeck. Penguins junior Ann Ciavarella shot 80.

Dayton finished in second place with 327 while Chicago State was third with 332.

Humber had to finish its first round Monday due to darkness and heavy winds, but wound up in fourth with 340.

Findlay and Walsh (353) tied for fifth place and Robert Morris was seventh (363).

YSU senior Mollie Boney finished round one with a score of 81, putting her in eighth place. Junior Brittany Stillwagon finished in 14th (83) and freshman Jamie Berndt shot a 97 for 42nd place.

YSU players competing as individuals were senior Amanda Brindley (80), junior Regan O’Brien (83) and freshman Amanda Spitzer (94).

Youngstown State next competes in the Zippy Invitational at Rosemont Country Club in Fairlawn Sept. 29-30.
