ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — David Ortiz, who finished with four RBIs, hit a three-run homer in the first inning after Scott Kazmir (11-7) threw nine straight balls to begin the game. Two batters later, Lowell hit a solo shot for a 4-0 lead. The Red Sox added seven more runs in the fourth, helping Daisuke Matsuzaka (17-2) become the first Japanese-born pitcher to win 17 games in a season. Hideo Nomo won 16 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers three times (1996, 2002, 2003).

NEW YORK — Mariano Rivera moved into second place on the career saves list. Beginning its final week at Yankee Stadium New York got a two-run homer from Xavier Nady in the second inning and a tie-breaking double by pinch-hitter Wilson Betemit in the seventh. Joba Chamberlain struck out two in a scoreless eighth after Phil Coke (1-0) pitched a perfect seventh to win his first major league decision. Ehren Wassermann (1-2) took the loss.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kyle Davies matched a career high with eight strikeouts in eight innings and combined with closer Joakim Soria on a four-hitter. Davies (7-7) didn’t allow a hit until Jose Lopez lined a high fastball into right for a single leading off the fifth.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Rookie Taylor Teagarden had his first career grand slam and a career-high five RBIs and Michael Young hit a tie-breaking single for Texas. Detroit carried an 8-7 lead into the eighth, but suffered its fifth straight defeat.

MILWAUKEE — Ted Lilly came close to following Carlos Zambrano’s no-hitter with one of his own. Lilly pitched no-hit ball until Mark Loretta’s seventh-inning single and Chicago Cubs swept the two-game series moved from Houston by Hurricane Ike.

WASHINGTON — John Lannan limited New York to one hit over seven innings and Anderson Hernandez delivered a two-run single off a tiring Pedro Martinez. Martinez (5-5) went six innings, allowing four runs and eight hits.
Padres 11, Rockies 5
DENVER — Adrian Gonzalez homered and drove in four runs and Wade LeBlanc earned his first career win as San Diego beat Colorado. Brian Giles had three hits and rookie Matt Antonelli hit his first career home run for the Padres.
