Eagles, Cowboys combine to net 61 points in first three quarters
IRVING, Texas (AP) — Marion Barber made an over-the-shoulder catch for a 17-yard touchdown and the Dallas Cowboys took a 31-30 lead over the Philadelphia Eagles into the fourth quarter Monday night.
The game was not completed in time for today’s edition.
Barber’s grab of Tony Romo’s pass with 5:08 left was the only score in the third quarter after the NFC East rivals had combined for the second-highest scoring half ever on Monday Night Football.
Terrell Owens caught two TD passes to take over sole possession of second place on the NFL career list, but Philadelphia scored twice in a span of 14 seconds after Romo had turnovers on consecutive snaps and led 30-24 at halftime.
Asante Samuel intercepted a pass by Romo late in the first quarter. A pass interference call set the Eagles up at the 1, and after a false start penalty, Brian Westbrook caught a 6-yard TD from Donovan McNabb to get the Eagles within 14-13 on the first play of the second quarter.
After Isaiah Stanback botched the ensuing kickoff to leave the Cowboys inside the 5, Romo bobbled the ball and lost control of it trying to hand off to Marion Barber. The ball rolled into the end zone, where Romo picked it up before being hit by Brian Dawkins and dropping it again. Chris Gocong recovered for a touchdown.
The Cowboys regained the lead when Owens caught a quick slant for a 4-yard TD. But the lead was gone when Westbrook plunged in from a yard out — one play after DeSean Jackson turned an apparent 61-yard TD into a 60-yard catch because he dropped the ball before crossing the goal line.
The teams traded field goals in the final 45 seconds, David Akers hitting from 22 yards and Nick Folk from 51.
