Wilson honored
The Missouri Valley Conference selected three football players as its players of the week including Youngstown State’s De’Angelo Wilson who had a punt return for a score and 95 return yards against Central State.
He returned five punts for 95 yards including a 39-yard return for a touchdown in the second quarter.
Soccer team bows
YOUNGSTOWN — Akron scored a late goal to defeat the YSU soccer team 3-2 at Stambaugh Stadium.
Carrie Wack and Geeneva Strelka scored for YSU (0-6).
With 30 seconds remaining in a tied game, Akron’s Jordan Baranowski scored the winning goal for the Zips, 5-0.
Volleyball wins
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — Three YSU players had at least 10 kills, and the Penguins won for the sixth time in the last seven matches with a four-set victory at West Virginia.
Kaitlin O’Hara had 12 kills and one error and Tasha Reid and Ruth Boscaljon had 10 apiece to lift YSU to its third straight victory over the Mountaineers.
YSU won 25-18, 25-15, 23-25, 25-24.

Prep volleyball
LOWELLVILLE — East High defeated the Lowellville volleyball team Saturday, 20-25, 25-13, 25-21, 21-25, 16-14.
Junior outside hitter Rashayla Taylor had eight aces, four kills and two blocks; junior outside hitter Charde Foster had four aces, five kills and two blocks and junior middle hitter Alexandra Hines had 11 kills, six aces and six blocks for East (7-2).
JVs: Lowellville 25-25, 17-22.
Racing rained out
MERCER, Pa. — The Western PA Sprint Championship scheduled at Mercer Raceway Park was rained out.
The event, which was also to include the FASTRAK Northeast Late Model Touring Series, E-Mods, Mod Lites and Mini Stocks, will not be rescheduled.
With the rain out, the 2008 championship point races have come to an end.
Rod George of Kittanning, Pa. is the Luxaire Heating & Cooling Sprint Car Champion for the third time in the past four seasons and Frank Guidace of Mercer won his second Tire Express Modified Championship.

MOBILE, Ala. — Angela Stanford won her second career LPGA Tour title, holing a 31‚Ñ2-foot par putt on the final hole for a 1-over 73 and a one-stroke victory over China’s Shanshan Feng.
The 30-year-old Texan, four strokes ahead entering the day after consecutive 67s in the second and third rounds, had an 11-under 277 total on The Crossings course at Magnolia Grove.

CONOVER, N.C. — R.W. Eaks successfully defended his title, closing with a 1-under 71 in windy conditions for a four-stroke victory over Tom Jenkins and Tom Kite.
The 56-year-old Eaks had a 16-under 200 total on the Rock Barn Golf and Spa course and earned $255,000 for his second victory of the year.

The two teams will meet in the first round of playoffs beginning Friday night at Staples Center, where the third-seeded Sparks were 12-5 during the regular season while winning the season series 2-1 over the No. 2 Storm.
