UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The YSU men’s cross country squad finished eighth and the women took 11th at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational.
Junior Justin Dickman finished in 28th with a 5.2-mile time of 27:40 to lead the men’s squad. Sophomore Kayla Witmer led the women’s team placing 30th with a 6K time of 23:28.
Finishing second for the men was sophomore Jake Lape, who finished in 47th with a time of 28:44. Senior John Sheppard ran a time of 29:16, which was good for 55th.
For the women behind Witmer was junior Lauren Blase, whose 24:24 was good for 54th. Freshman Liz Shivers finished 76th with a 25:25, junior Jen Roman finished with a 26:33 which that her in 91st, and sophomore Kelcie Witmer finished 93rd with a time of 26:39.
Volleyball
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The YSU volleyball team posted a .360 attack percentage and held Saint Peter’s to a .090 mark in a three-set victory at the Robert Morris Invitational.
The Penguins hit at least .320 in every set in recording their second-best percentage of the season.
Ruth Boscaljon had 11 kills and three blocks, and Allison Heinz had six kills in eight attempts for the Penguins (6-3).
Tasha Reid added six kills, and Karla Everhart had four kills and 35 assists.

Curbstoners
BOARDMAN — Youngstown State athletic director Ron Strollo will be the guest speaker for the Curbstone Coaches’ first session of the season on Monday at Blue Wolf Catering on Lockwood Blvd.
The dinner starts at 6 p.m. The event is open to the public. Subsequent Curbstoner luncheons will be on Mondays at noon at Blue Wolf.
Phantoms fall
BOARDMAN — The Mahoning Valley Phantoms came up short in their preseason finale, losing 5-3 to Detroit’s Motor City Machine at the Ice Zone.
The teams traded goals throughout the game, but it was Jake Friedman’s goal at 18:34 into the second period that ended up being the difference, putting Motor City up to stay.
The Phantoms outshot the Machine by a 36-20 margin but could not get enough past the combined goaltending of R.J. Heath and Joe Rogers in the exhibition contest.
The Phantoms’ goaltending duo of Jordan Tibbett and Garrett Bartus combined to save 15 shots.
Mahoning Valley got goals from Colin Lundholm, Christian Long and Trevor Shively.
The Phantoms now head to Minnesota for the Sherwood NAHL Showcase.
Napolitan eighth in Salt Lake City
SALT LAKE CITY — Anthony Napolitan of Austintown placed eighth in the BMX Dirt final during the AST Dew Tour-Toyota Challenge at Energy Solutions Arena Friday.
Napolitan’s score for his runs totaled 88.59. Winner Mike Aitken of Salt Lake City scored 92.08, followed by a pair of Australians: Corey Bohan (91.92) and Cameron White (91.92).
Heard selected
YOUNGSTOWN — Braylon Heard of Cardinal Mooney High was picked the Steel Valley Conf. football player of the week.
In a 17-0 win over Warren Harding Friday, Heard carried 11 times for 105 yards and he scored two touchdowns.

Ravens-Texans game rescheduled for Nov. 9
HOUSTON — The Baltimore Ravens-Houston Texans game has been rescheduled to Nov. 9 after Reliant Stadium was severely damaged by Hurricane Ike.
The Texans’ home opener, was originally scheduled for Sunday, then postponed to Monday night as Ike approached the Gulf Coast. The storm slammed into Texas on Friday night and moved into Houston early Saturday morning.
High wind ripped off pieces of the stadium’s retractable roof and debris littered the inside.
The Texans said alternate sites for the game were considered, but logistics made them impossible.
Hatton too sick
LAS VEGAS — Ricky Hatton has been knocked out at the MGM Grand for the second time in a year.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. did it last December, and an illness flattened the English star Saturday.
Paulie Malignaggi, who will meet Hatton in a 140-pound fight on Nov. 22, was forced to pose for menacing photos with Hatton’s nameplate after Hatton missed a promotional news conference with what might be a bout of food poisoning.
Hatton (44-1, 31 KOs) is well known for high living and weight gain between his fights.
But he drank nothing but lemonade in a hotel bar Friday night after his lengthy flight from England, where he’ll train with Floyd Mayweather Sr. for his first American bout since his first career loss to Mayweather.
Belmont Park
NEW YORK — Music Note cruised to an 81‚Ñ2-length win over Hamsa in the $250,000 Gazelle Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, one of five stakes races Saturday at Belmont Park.
Music Note, a leader in the division, had little trouble defeating three rivals for her fourth win in five starts this season. Her only loss this year was a head defeat to Proud Spell.
It was a brilliant result,” said trainer Saeed bin Suroor. “She’s a tough filly, one of the best two or three in the country.”
Music Note earned $150,000 for Godolphin Racing. Javier Castellano was aboard as she ran the 1 1-8 miles in 1:50.20.
Big Brown wins
OCEANPORT, N.J. — Big Brown refused to lose his final prep race for the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic.
The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner opened a big early lead and then held off a determined challenge by Proudinsky the entire length of the stretch to capture the $500,000 Monmouth Stakes by a neck on Saturday.
It was the 3-year-old colt’s seventh victory in eight starts and it has the potential to set up a spectacular Breeders’ Cup Classic — Big Brown against Curlin, last year’s Horse of the Year.
