Power lines and trees fall as remnants of Ike ram through the Valley

The Mahoning and Shenango Valleys are getting a taste of the remnants of Hurricane Ike as the storm front moved through the region this afternoon.

Steady winds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts of 65 mph and more were hitting both northeastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania starting around 8 p.m.

The region is under a high wind warning which is expected to end at 2 a.m. Monday.

Police agencies in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Mercer and Lawrence counties had numerous reports of trees and power lines down, disrupted electrical service and some road closures, but no immediate report of anyone being injured.

Nancy Falgiani of Boardman said her Ron Park Drive neighborhood was filled with fallen trees.

“It was like a little tornado went through here.”

CinemaSouth Inc. 7420 South Ave. had to close when it lost power shortly after 9 p.m.

About 150 movie-goers in 10 auditoriums had to leave the building. They were given emergency passes which they can use at their convenience.
