GIRARD — The Humility of Mary Health Partners Diabetes Education Department is offering a Diabetes Expo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Mahoning Country Club, 710 Liberty St. The expo includes presentations, a question/answer session with a doctor, pharmacist and dietitian; exhibits; lunch; and a Chinese auction. Classes help diabetics make better food choices

YOUNGSTOWN — A three-week Dining with Diabetes series of classes are offered Oct. 13, 20 and 27 at the Senior Independence Center of Mahoning County, 1110 Fifth Ave., from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

The class is open to diabetics, their family members and caretakers. It is sponsored by the Ohio State University Extension, Mahoning County, Forum Health/Diabetes Help and The Senior Independence Center of Mahoning County. The cost is $25. Pre-registration is required. Call (330) 533-5538.

NAMI walk is Oct. 18

CANFIELD — The National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) annual walk is Oct. 18 at the Canfield Fairgrounds. The event is coordinated by the local affiliate, NAMI Mahoning Valley, which coverers Trumbull, Mahoning, and Columbiana Counties. Check in time for the three-mile event is 9 a.m. The start time is 10 a.m.

There are seven teams: Trumbull Lifelines, Church of God Servers, YSU Counseling Program, TGFN, Dianna’s Darlings, Mahoning County Mental Health Board, and PsyCare.¬† More teams and team captains are still needed. Trumbull LifeLines leads the¬†online walker registration, with three team members registered on-line.¬† A $25 Giant Eagle gift card goes to the team captain with the most on-line member registrations by Monday. Emotional freedom workshop planned

VILLA MARIA, Pa. — Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center will sponsor an Emotional Freedom Technique workshop from will be offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 11.

Presenter Rose Marie Fantelli will explain how EFT is an effective way to change perceptions of life experiences. Negative charges associated with thoughts are eliminated through a simple tapping practice. Thoughts and feelings begin to transform and move and old established patterns are changed. Developed by Gary Craig, a Stanford engineer, EFT is life changing and is widely used to help people with anxiety, depression, pain, negative beliefs, self improvement, weight loss, and manifesting abundance.

Facilitator will be Rose Marie Fantelli, a professional clinical counselor, energy practitioner and mind body coach. She holds a master’s in counseling from John Carroll University.

Breakfast session at Kennedy clinic

YOUNGSTOWN — Deborah Beck, president of the Drug and Alcohol Service Providers Organization of Pennsylvania, is the keynote speaker for The Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic’s “Breakfast with Legislators,” which is from 9 to 11 a.m. on Oct. 3, at the Holiday Inn Boardman, 7410 South Ave., Boardman.

The breakfast event provides the opportunity for local citizens, treatment providers, and elected officials to discuss crucial issues regarding chemical dependency treatment and recovery, and the impact of addiction on society.

Other speakers include Eloise Traina, executive director of Family Recovery Center and president of Ohio Alliance of Recovery Providers, and Sam Landry, Safe Drug-Free School coordinator for the South Range School District.

The CVS Caremark All Kids Can Program September promotion invites consumers to purchase the $2.99 mesh sponge through Sept. 27, from which a donation will be made to Easter Seals with every purchase. The program benefits Easter Seals of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

Stroke screening

Heart Walk is Saturday

YOUNGSTOWN — More than 2,000 residents from Mahoning, Columbiana and Trumbull communities are expected to participate in the American Heart Association’s 2008 Start! Heart Walk on Saturday. Starting at the Youngstown State University track, participants will walk a two-mile course around campus. Survivors will proudly wear Red Caps of courage.

The event features health screenings from local agencies and businesses and other exhibits will be part of the health fair located on the YSU track. The 2008 Heart Child, 5-year-old Molly McGaffick, and her family will lead the walkers along with Walk Chairman Robert Shroder, president and chief executive officer of Humility of Mary Health Partners. Survivors’ celebration

GREENVILLE, Pa. — UPMC Cancer Centers at UPMC Horizon and Grove City, Pa., Medical Centers are offering “A Celebration of Life” as the hospitals’ annual National Cancer Survivors Day celebration on Wednesday at St. Michael Church, 80 North High St., Greenville.

The event begins at 5 p.m. with a light supper, followed by a concert by David Bailey, singer/songwriter and 12-year cancer survivor at 7 p.m. Cancer survivors may bring one guest to supper. CLEVELAND — Thousands of individuals, families and friends whose lives are affected by autism are expected to participate in the Autism Speaks Now Walk Sept. 28 at 10 a.m. at Progressive Field, 2401 Ontario St. Registration time is 8 a.m.

Joining the walkers, sponsored by Toys “R” Us, are honorary chairmen, Dennis and Elizabeth Kucinich. All proceeds from the event benefit the national advocacy organization Autism Speaks.
