Woman’s purse stolen

NEW CASTLE, Pa.— Pennsylvania State Police arrested a teen boy for snatching a purse from a 51-year-old city woman as she walked along state Route 18 to find help for her broken-down car.

The victim told police said she was approached from behind by a 16-year-old boy who grabbed her purse and ran into a wooded area in North Beaver Township around 9:45 a.m. Thursday

A state trooper and his police dog tracked the suspect through the woods toward Green Meadows Mobile Home Park on Glenkirk Road.

They located the purse, with an undisclosed amount of cash missing from it, in the woods.

State police questioned several mobile home park residents and were able to apprehend the suspect, who is in custody of county juvenile authorities. The victim’s money was recovered.

Fundraiser for Niles baby

NILES — A fundraiser is set for 4 p.m. Saturday for the Niles baby who was placed in scalding water by her mother.

Relatives of 18-month-old Summer Hall are hosting a dinner at 4 p.m., followed by a 50/50 raffle and auction. Proceeds will help pay for medical expenses incurred during the child’s time at the Akron Burn Center, as well as wages her father lost while the child recovered.

The event will be at the Army and Navy Garrison No. 224 at 418 Mason St.

Catherine Hall pleaded guilty Aug. 26 to child endangering for placing her daughter in scalding bath water in her and her husband’s Niles apartment. She is awaiting sentencing.
