Boy escapes gunfire
YOUNGSTOWN — A 16-year-old boy ran into a store on the 1300 block of Wick Avenue to escape a hail of gunfire, police said.
The Bryson Street boy told police at least 20 shots were fired at him from a white Jeep as he walked near his North Side home around 8 p.m. Wednesday. He was not injured and identified the suspect for police.
ACT prep classes
CANFIELD — The Ursuline Center, 4300 Shields Road, will be the location of a series of five Sunday courses to help students prepare for the Oct. 25 ACT college admission test.
Participants can choose a 10:30 a.m. to 1:05 p.m. or 2 to 4:35 p.m session. The classes will meet on five consecutive Sundays starting this weekend. Tuition is $175 and includes a workbook with real ACT questions.

4th suspect in Dow case brought to Youngstown
YOUNGSTOWN — A fourth suspect in the shooting death of James E. Dow, 28, of South Lakeview Avenue, was brought back to the city by U.S. marshals on Wednesday and is expected to be arraigned Friday on a murder charge, said Capt. Kenneth Centorame, chief of detectives.
Aaron Sherrod, 21, was captured in Georgia in July. Dow was found dead in the basement of 145 Thornton Ave. on the North Side on Nov. 18, 2007. Centorame said the motive could have been robbery or drugs or a combination.
Already charged are D’Metri Lee, 18; Edward E. Taylor II, 19; and Michael W. Lee, 21. Taylor and Michael Lee have pleaded guilty to their part in the slaying, according to Vindicator files.
2 vacant-house fires
YOUNGSTOWN — The vacant house at 1701 Richmond Ave. on the East Side was deliberately set on fire around 1:45 a.m. Thursday, the fire department said.
For safety reasons, the structure was allowed to burn down. Damage was set at $10,000, a total loss.
Late Wednesday, the vacant house at 405 Williamson Ave. on the South Side was destroyed by fire, reports show.
Firefighters found the front door wide open when they arrived just before 9 p.m., and the first floor was fully engulfed in flames. Damage was set at $10,500, a total loss. The cause is under investigation.
Potential suit discussed
LISBON — Columbiana County Prosecutor Robert Herron met Wednesday with the county commissioners to discuss a potential lawsuit.
Herron said a county employee’s actions may result in a lawsuit against the county. Herron declined further comment.
Commissioner Jim Hoppel said the commissioners were involved because they oversee county spending, including insurance. Hoppel said the discussion was preliminary and no action was taken after the meeting. He added no lawsuit has been filed.
Spisak tries to run as Green Party candidate
LISBON — A Congressional candidate is trying to move from a write-in to a party candidate.
Dennis S. Spisak of Struthers filed recently to run for representative of the 6th Congressional District.
Democrat U.S. Rep. Charlie Wilson of St. Clairsville is the incumbent. He’s opposed by Republican Richard Stobbs of Dillonvale.
However, Columbiana County election officials said Spisak is asking to be switched to the Green Party.
Jeff Ortega, assistant director of communications for the Ohio Secretary of State’s Office, said Wednesday if Spisak can prove he was named as a candidate by the Green Party, his name would go on the ballot along with the other two candidates’ names.
