Rams: St. Louis dipped into the past to fill a void at wide receiver, signing former No. 1 pick
Rams: St. Louis dipped into the past to fill a void at wide receiver, signing former No. 1 pick Eddie Kennison. Kennison, 35, played for the Rams from 1996-98 after being the 18th overall pick of the ’96 draft. He’s been out of the NFL since Kansas City released him in February. The Rams need a replacement for Drew Bennett, who broke his left foot in the first quarter of the opening 38-3 loss at Philadelphia. Bennett will wear a cast for three to four weeks and could be out as long as six weeks.
Seahawks: Starting right guard Rob Sims went on injured reserve and wide receivers Billy McMullen and Samie Parker were signed to fill a gaping void for the reloading Seahawks. Coach Mike Holmgren said Sims tore a pectoral muscle during Sunday’s 34-10 loss at Buffalo and kept playing. The third-year veteran started all 16 games last season at left guard before moving to the right to replace Chris Gray. Gray has since retired.
Dolphins: The season has barely begun and quarterback Chad Pennington already knows an open wide receiver can be hard to find. The search kept him in the film room past dinnertime last week. The team complex was largely deserted, but Pennington and free-agent rookie receiver Davone Bess were still studying game tapes. He has been with the Dolphins barely a month, and his receiving corps is short on experience, and in the season opener it showed. Pennington completed only six passes to wideouts, and Miami lost to Pennington’s former team, the New York Jets, 20-14.
Chiefs: If anything happens to Damon Huard the next couple of weeks, Kansas City will be about as green as green can be at the most vital offensive position. Tyler Thigpen goes into Sunday’s game against Oakland as No. 2 quarterback, and has thrown exactly six passes in the NFL. He completed two to his own team and one to the opposition. Ingle Martin, signed Wednesday off the practice squad of the Tennessee Titans, has never thrown a pass in the NFL.
Bengals: Antwan Odom wants to make the Titans wish he was still on their side. The defensive end wants to play a bigger role Sunday against his former team, which let him go in the offseason. Odom agreed to a five-year, $29.5 million deal with the Bengals, who were among the NFL’s worst at getting to the quarterback last season.
