CORTLAND — Quilts will be displayed throughout Cortland on Sept. 19 and 20 as part of a show and contest sponsored by the Cortland Bazetta Historical Society and Museum.

The event will feature a display of a 1939 Cortland community album quilt and quilts from the 1800s, as well as hands-on workshops that showcase modern quilting techniques.

Cindy Oravecz, well-known quilter and author of quilting books, will speak at a luncheon program on “The History of the Baltimore Album” at noon Sept. 20.

A contest, judged by quilting experts from Northeast Ohio, will feature prizes of sewing machines for the winners in each of the three age levels. Nearly 100 quilts are registered for the contest.

The display of quilts and contest entries begins at the Opera House, 152 Park Ave., where a $5 bracelet entitles visitors to both days of the event along with free demonstrations on French ribbon ruching by Oravecz, and folded fabric flowers by Peg Viole.

Hands-on workshops are “Wallet on a String” by Peg Viole at 11 a.m. and “Redwork Embroidery by Betty Kerner at 3 p.m. Preregistration is recommended for the luncheon program, which costs $15, and the workshops.
