Sept. 1, 1986: Cooey, on leave from the U.S. Army, and accomplice Clint Dickens rape and murder University of Akron students Wendy Offredo, 21, and Dawn McCreery, 20, in woods in suburban Akron.
Dec. 9, 1986: Cooey sentenced to death after a trial before a three-judge panel.
Dec. 11, 1989: Cooey’s conviction and death sentence upheld by the Ohio Supreme Court.
April 1, 1991: Cooey’s appeal rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court.
July 11, 2003: Ohio Parole Board denies Cooey’s first request for clemency.
July 24, 2003: After spending more than 24 hours in the death house at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville awaiting execution, Cooey receives a last-minute reprieve from a federal judge.
Dec. 8, 2004: Cooey files a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Columbus challenging Ohio’s lethal-injection protocol.
Feb. 3, 2005: Cooey makes an unsuccessful attempt to escape from death row, then housed in Mansfield.
April 21: The U.S. Supreme Court rules against Cooey in his injection lawsuit, saying he had missed a deadline.

Aug. 7: Cooey files a federal lawsuit, saying his weight and a prescription drug he takes for migraine headaches could interfere with a drug used in the execution process.
Aug. 28: Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh says she’ll investigate Cooey’s 2003 claim he killed a man for beating up his sister, a crime he says he was never prosecuted for.
Sept. 2: Ohio Parole Board recommends to deny Cooey’s request for clemency.
