Men’s golf is sixth

BOWLING GREEN — The YSU men’s golf team finished tied for sixth place in the John Piper Intercollegiate meet at Stone Ridge Golf Club on Tuesday.

The Penguins shot a three-round total of 906 (308-296-302). Ohio University won the event (291-296-289) and Eastern Kentucky was second.

Leading the way for the Penguins was redshirt freshman Joey Santisi who carded a three round total of 222 (77-71-74). One stroke behind Santisi was junior Tim Morrow who finished in 14th with a 223 (74-74-75).

Jones named

YOUNGSTOWN — Deidre Jones has been named director of basketball operations for the YSU women’s basketball program.

Jones spent the last three seasons as a student manager for the women’s basketball team at the University of Michigan.

She will assist with film exchange, travel, on-campus recruiting and various administrative duties.

She walked on to the Michigan program before knee injuries ended her playing career. She also played two seasons at Wabash Valley College in Mt. Carmel, Ill.

She is a native of Farmington Hills, Mich.

Basketball volunteers

YOUNGSTOWN — The YSU women’s basketball team completed its second community service activity in the past three weeks at the Park Vista Retirement Community of Youngstown.

The student-athletes and coaching staff hand-stirred apple butter that was later sold at the 36th Annual Park Vista Apple Butter Festival.

All proceeds benefitted the Park Vista Life Care Fund, which provides continuing care to retirement communities and services to Youngstown residents.

Longtime YSU supporter Helen Stambaugh has organized the event since its inception in 1972.

The next service project is Sunday at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

They will volunteer as servers at the spaghetti dinner from noon to 3 p.m.

Football tickets

YOUNGSTOWN — Tickets for the Ursuline’s football game against Massillon will be on sale at the school from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, Thursday and Friday.

Reserved tickets are $7, general admission tickets are $6 and student tickets are $4.

Only reserved and general admission tickets will be sold at the stadium.

The game is Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Stambaugh Stadium.

Howland hall of fame

HOWLAND — Tickets are now available for the Howland High School hall of fame induction banquet to be held at DiLucia’s Banquet Center on October 25.

Basketball class

The Mahoning Valley Basketball Officials Association has a class for those individuals wishing to become an OHSAA registered official.

Classes will be held at Chaney High School beginning Oct. 13 at 6 p.m.

The Olympic Dreams Gymnastics Center will celebrate National Gymnastics Day on Sept. 13.

Stringer honored

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Footwear company Nike has paid tribute to women’s basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer, a 1970 and 1973 Slippery Rock University graduate.

Nike has named a child development center after her and called a wing for toddlers The Rock.

The Stringer Center is located in Beaverton, Or. and houses 26 classrooms.

Stringer is the head women’s basketball coach at Rutgers Univ.

Hockey rout

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia — With more goals than minutes in the game, Slovakia’s women’s ice hockey team claimed an amazing 82-0 victory over Bulgaria in Olympic qualifying.

Slovakia outshot the Bulgarians 139-0 during the 60-minute game, played in Latvia. The margin of victory is a record for a women’s International Ice Hockey Federation-sanctioned event.

“We took it as training,” Slovakia coach Miroslav Karafiat said after Saturday’s game.
