The chief says he will make a recommendation after the application process.

NORTH LIMA — Beaver Township is looking for a new assistant fire chief.

The trustees on Monday accepted the resignation of Scott Rice, who resigned to accept a promotion to assistant fire chief in Springfield Township, where he lives. He will remain active with the Beaver Township Fire Department as a firefighter/Emergency Medical Services volunteer.

Officials are accepting applications to fill the post. Requirements and qualifications for the position will remain posted through Sept. 22 at the township’s safety and administration buildings.

Fire Chief Russ Osborne said he will provide the township trustees with his recommendation to “fill the position once the application period ends.”

In other township matters, officials commended police officer Chris Albert, Lt. Mitch Moore and dispatchers Rick Kridler and Kim Carney for their actions on Aug. 28 while participating in the Ohio Vehicle Impaired Task Force’s saturation patrol.

According to police, Albert and Kridler were on patrol at 1 a.m. on Western Reserve Road when Albert spotted a condominium engulfed in flames. Albert and Kridler immediately evacuated the two elderly residents, who were sleeping.

Moore arrived shortly after and evacuated the sleeping residents of the attached condominium.

Carney relayed information to Boardman dispatchers, and the Boardman Fire Department arrived shortly after and extinguished the fire. The estimated damage exceeded $50,000, officials said. Trustees also accepted the resignation of part-time police officer Daniel K. DeVille, who has accepted a position with the U.S. Marshal’s Service, and reserve officer Gerald D’Angelo, who has been hired by Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department.
