Boscaljon is picked
INDIANAPOLIS — YSU junior volleyball middle hitter Ruth Boscaljon was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week.
Boscaljon was a major presence at the net in helping YSU win the Comfort Suites 49er Tournament last weekend.
She recorded 17 blocks in 10 sets during the week for a Horizon League-best average of 1.70. Boscaljon also helped the Penguins post a league-best 3.0 blocks per set last week.
The junior was one block shy of a career high against Norfolk State, posting two solo blocks and six block assists in just three sets.
She then had four blocks and nine kills in a 3-0 win over Howard, and she just missed her first career double-double in the championship match against Charlotte with 10 kills, nine digs and five blocks.
Barbosa named MVP
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The YSU volleyball team used a season-high 13 blocks to defeat Charlotte in four sets and capture the Comfort Suites 49er Tournament.
Tournament MVP Ebony Barbosa had eight kills and eight digs for the Penguins, who dropped just one set in the tournament.
Barbosa was joined on the all-tournament team by sophomore Haley Kapferer and senior setter Karla Everhart.
Barbosa registered a team-high 29 kills during the three-match tournament and trailed only libero Laurie Shives in digs with 27.
Kapferer had 28 kills and hit an impressive .415 to go along with seven blocks for the weekend. Everhart dished out 108 assists, had 17 digs and also had seven blocks.
Also Kaitlin O’Hara had a season-high 14 kills.

Lyell to fight
CHESTER, W. Va — Billy Lyell (16-6) of Niles meets Khristian Geraci (3-3-1) of Pittsburgh in a six- round junior middleweight fight on Sept. 25th at the Mountaineer Casino.
The seven-bout card, tabbed as “Border Wars,” pits boxers from Ohio against challengers from Pennsylvania on neutral turf (West Virginia) in a unique team competition format.
Lyell compiled an amateur record of 35-17 before turning pro.
Also on the Mountaineer card, WBA #15 lightweight, Verquan ‘The Show’ Kimbrough (20-1-1) of Aliquippa, PA will defend his NABA lightweight belt against former NABF champ and WBC #1 contender, Michael ‘Cold Blood’ Clark (37-5) of Columbus in the 10-round main event.

Adams selected
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. SEmD Westminster College soccer player Christina Adams (Hubbard High) was picked the Presidents’ Athletic Conference offensive player of the week.
Adams scored three goals and assisted on three more for nine points in three games as the Titans racked up a 2-0-1 week.
