NOTEBOOK \ Ohio State
Buckeyes buzz: It’s easier to get word on nuclear armament in Iran than it is to get an update on injured TB Chris “Beanie” Wells. But one observer said that Wells was “hanging out” when practice started Monday but was dressed to play. No report, however, on whether he was able to practice or withstand contact.
It’s an honor: The honorary captain for Saturday’s 8:22 p.m. kickoff at No. 1 Southern Cal is Rex Kern, who led the Buckeyes to the 1968 national championship with a win over USC in the Rose Bowl.
They gave ’em out anyway: Nobody was very satisfied with their play after Saturday’s squeaky-close 26-14 win over Ohio. But that doesn’t mean the Ohio State coaching staff skipped handing out its weekly awards. Cornerback Malcolm Jenkins was the defensive player of the week with an interception, three tackles and a tackle for a loss. Dan Herron (Warren Harding), who rushed for 50 yards and a score, was the top offensive player. Shaun Lane (Hubbard), with a recovered fumble that led to a critical touchdown, was the honoree on special units. Scout team honors went to: QB Ross Oltorik on offense; DB Nate Oliver on defense; and RB Joe Gantz on special teams. Lawrence Wilson was the top lineman on defense and Alex Boone on offense. Nobody was awarded the Jack Tatum big hit of the week.
The line: Ever since No. 5 Ohio State’s struggles Saturday, the line has gradually moved up for Saturday’s game at USC. The Trojans were a 101‚Ñ2-point favorite late Monday.
A reunion of sorts: USC and Ohio State have squared off 21 times, including seven meetings in the Rose Bowl. Here’s another number: USC has won its last seven meetings against Big Ten teams — by an average margin of 28 points.
