BOARDMAN — The Youngstown Southeastern Railroad crossing at Meadowbrook Avenue and Southern Boulevard will close late Friday afternoon for rebuilding. The closure will start after the last school bus run Friday and reopen sometime Monday.
Boy hurt in fall off ATV
YOUNGSTOWN — An 8-year-old Regis Street boy who fell off an ATV he was riding near his home was in critical condition Monday. Quinton Brooks was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center around 7:15 p.m. Sunday, police said. He had been on the ATV with his brother and a cousin when he fell off.
Sept. 11 ceremony set
WARREN — The Warren Fire Department will have a Sept. 11 memorial ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Warren Central Fire Station, 111 South Street S.E.
The ceremony will observe the seventh anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Centers in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the firefighter and civilian lives lost that day.
State funds to fix up site
COLUMBIANA — The state Controlling Board released $742,474 in Clean Ohio funding for the Columbiana County Port Authority on Monday.
The funds will go toward demolition and remediation activities at the former National Refractories property in Columbiana.
The 37-acre area is located on Esterly Drive. The port authority plans to remove a 300-foot brick kiln at the site, providing space for an expansion of Zarbana Industries Inc., which plans a $1 million, 20,000-square-foot industrial project, according to documents.
National Refractories purchased the site in 1985 but ended its operations there and declared bankruptcy about six years ago, according to documents.
Teachers remain on strike
NEWTON FALLS — The teachers strike by 82 members of the Newton Falls Classroom Teachers Association continued Monday with no negotiations planned.
John Creatura, a field representative for the Ohio Federation of Teachers, said picketing and replacement teachers continued for a second school day. The strike started Friday.
Superintendent David Wilson said there were 581 students at school Monday, which is 40 percent of the 1,448 students on the kindergarten through grade 12 campus on state Route 534. Students attending the vocational school are not counted.
Wilson said there were 46 teachers working Monday, including one member of the union who crossed the picket line and returned to work.
