Youngstown man charged in death of Warren diner owner

WARREN — A detective working on the investigation into the fatal shooting of Freddie’s Diner owner Fred A. DeVengencie and the wounding of his son Aug. 12 says he is relieved for the family of the two Warren men now that the man who apparently committed the crimes is behind bars.

“They know that the person who took the life of their family member is off the streets,” Detective Wayne Mackey said today.

On Saturday afternoon, Warren police officers and agents with the U.S. Marshal’s Office arrested Ardeed I. Mitchell, 28, of Livingston Avenue in Youngstown, on a warrant charging him with the crimes.

Police learned of Mitchell through DNA evidence collected at the crime scene and analyzed late last week by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation.

The DNA matched Mitchell, whose DNA was on file because he previously had been convicted of a felony and spent time in prison, Mackey said, adding that Mitchell was just released on January from prison.

Mackey said the investigation so far had not turned up Mitchell’s name, so he has more work to do now to find out more about why Mitchell was in Warren.
