Vacant Girard home heavily damaged by fire


GIRARD – A vacant home at 302 S. Davis St. had major smoke and heat damage on Monday, the fire department said. The rear of the basement was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the two-story home. Two engines and the chief’s car responded to a call at 4:51 p.m. and the crew fought the flames until around 7:30 p.m. The source and origin of the fire are unknown and under investigation. Loss was estimated at $40,000 to $50,000. There was no damage to surrounding homes.
