The shelter provides safe, short-term refuge for women and children in the Youngstown area and is run by Burdman Group Inc., an Ohio-based nonprofit organization. Fast facts include:
Has operated 24 hours per day, every day since it opened Sept. 19, 1991.
More than 1,100 women and 2,300 children have received emergency shelter, meals and counseling.
Is funded through the United Way, Mahoning County Mental Health Board, federal and state grants, contributions and fees from county filings for marriages, divorces and dissolutions.
Donations are always appreciated, and the shelter currently has a list of numerous household and clothing items needed.
