No. 5 Florida 26, Miami 3 — Tim Tebow threw two touchdown passes, speedster Percy Harvin ran for a score and the Gators used a swarming defensive effort to beat the Hurricanes for the first time since 1985. Tebow finished 21-of-35 passing for 256 yards and two TD passes. He also ran 13 times for 55 yards.
No. 6 Missouri 52, Southeast Missouri 3 — Chase Daniel threw three touchdown passes in the first half and Derrick Washington scored three times, helping the Tigers run up a quick 42-point lead before calling in the reserves.
No. 10 Texas 42, UTEP 13 — Colt McCoy passed for 282 yards and four touchdowns and Quan Cosby caught eight passes for 154 yards and a score for the Longhorns (2-0), who built a big first-half lead, then put the game away with McCoy’s 15-yard TD strike to Jordan Shipley early in the fourth quarter.
No. 12 Texas Tech 35, Nevada 19 — Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree hooked up for an 82-yard touchdown pass and Eric Morris returned a punt 86 yards for a score to lead Texas Tech. Shannon Woods also ran for two touchdowns for the Red Raiders (2-0).
No. 13 Alabama 20, Tulane 6 — Javier Arenas returned a punt 87 yards for a touchdown and as Bama held on for a shaky win over Tulane, forced out of New Orleans a week ago by the threat of Hurricane Gustav.
No. 14 Kansas 29, Louisiana Tech 0 — Dezmon Briscoe broke six tackles to turn a short pass into a 48-yard touchdown, and Todd Reesing threw for career-high 412 yards and three scores
No. 15 Arizona State 41, Stanford 17 — Rudy Carpenter threw for 345 yards and three touchdowns to lead Arizona State. Facing relentless pressure on a 100-degree night in the desert, Carpenter completed 27-of-36 passes and threw an interception. He was sacked twice and fumbled once. Carpenter has thrown for a school-record 733 yards in the first two games.
No. 17 South Florida 31, UCF 24, OT — Matt Grothe threw for 346 yards and three touchdowns, including a 25-yarder to Taurus Johnson in overtime, and South Florida beat Central Florida in the final scheduled meeting between the rivals whose campuses are barely 100 miles apart.
No. 22 Utah 42, UNLV 21 — Brian Johnson threw for two touchdowns and scored on a 56-yard run for Utah, which scored three touchdowns in the third quarter and pulled away after a shaky first half.
MISSOURI VALLEY CONFERENCE
S. Illinois 37, Hampton 31 — Chris Dieker threw for three touchdowns and Larry Warner had a 95-yard touchdown off a kick return to lead Southern Illinois.
W. Illinois 63, Quincy 0 — Running back Herb Donaldson rushed for three touchdowns in the first quarter to lead Western Illinois, which scored on each of its first six drives.
N. Dakota St. 50, Cent. Connecticut 14 — Nick Mertens threw for 186 yards and three touchdowns and North Dakota State raced out to a 40-0 lead.
MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE
Arizona 41, Toledo 16 — Nic Grigsby rushed for three first-half touchdowns to lead Arizona. Grigsby carried 20 times for 135 yards despite sitting out the third quarter. Willie Tuitama completed 25 of 33 for 292 yards and two second-half touchdowns. Toledo’s Aaron Opelt completed 21 of 31 for 170 yards in the Rockets’ season opener. Stephen Williams caught 12 for 67 yards, including Toledo’s only touchdown.
Minnesota 42, Bowling Green 17 — Adam Weber threw three touchdown passes and made a nifty grab of his own in the fourth quarter to help Minnesota beat Bowling Green. The Gophers turned a pair of Bowling Green turnovers into two touchdowns, sealing the victory.
W. Michigan 29, N. Illinois 26 — Tim Hiller ran for a touchdown and threw for another in a 3:06 span of the fourth quarter, leading Western Michigan past Northern Illinois.
Iowa State 48, Kent State 28 — Austen Arnaud and Phillip Bates each threw a touchdown pass to R.J. Sumrall and Iowa State turned a blocked punt and two fumble recoveries into 21 points in the Cyclones’ victory.
BIG TEN
Northwestern 24, Duke 20 — Tyrell Sutton ran for two touchdowns and Northwestern’s defense made two critical fourth-down stops down the stretch, leading the Wildcats over Duke.
Indiana 45, Murray St. 3 — Indiana’s Marcus Thigpen scored touchdowns on his first two carries, produced five plays longer than 20 yards in the first half and led the Hoosiers to a rout of Murray State.
