Kickball league to form for Youngstown youths

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Police Athletic League is forming a kickball league for kids age 5 to 17. The first game is Sept. 27. Games will be held on Saturdays, beginning at noon, at West End Fields, located at the dead end of North Hazelwood Avenue next to Stambaugh Academy. Parents may sign their children up by filling out an application at the police chief’s office, second floor, 116 W. Boardman St. The deadline is Sept. 19. Parents or family members interested in coaching or volunteering for the league may call Edward Colon, YPAL executive director, or Dave Crawford, program coordinator, at (330) 743-2156.

Veterans group to move across from courthouse

MERCER, Pa. — The Mercer Council Veterans’ Advisory Council will be moving into the former jail warden’s residence next to Republican headquarters on South Diamond Street, across the street from the courthouse. County Commissioner John Lechner said the county will lease the building for $1 per year to the group. The office will give the council a presence in the county as well as a base for their activities, such as their shuttle service and annual POW/MIA vigils, he said. He expects details of the lease to be finalized soon and ready for formal approval by commissioners. The building now is used for storage. The advisory council meets monthly and comprises representatives of veterans’ groups in the county, the Mercer County’s Veterans’ Affairs office and the commissioners.

Fall Into Fun planned

YOUNGSTOWN — Mill Creek MetroParks Fellows Riverside Gardens will usher in the fall season with Fall Into Fun — A Family Celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 27. Families and friends are invited to share a day of fun celebrating the 50th anniversary of Fellows Riverside Gardens. A garden marketplace will feature items by local artisans as well as mums, plants and bulbs. Autumn displays will abound throughout the gardens, and gardening experts will answer questions. There will also be entertainment, food and activities for all ages. Admission is free.

Project gets $5,000

YOUNGSTOWN — Help Hotline Crisis Center Inc. has been notified by Ridgecliff Foundation that it received a $5,000 grant for the Recovery Project. The project assists mental health consumers in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties with the recovery process. The program is also funded by the Mahoning County Mental Health Board, Trumbull Lifelines and the Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation. YOUNGSTOWN — The next Youngstown Police Department citizen police academy will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 11-Nov. 13. Reboot and Rebuild

YOUNGSTOWN — The Salvation Army is presenting Reboot and Rebuild Community Day, open to the public, Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1501 Glenwood Ave. The free program aims to provide information on community assistance resources and jobs.
