Deskin sets marks, keys Boardman
EAST PALESTINE — Boardman junior Sam Deskin set meet and course records to help the Spartans cruise to the team title at Saturday’s East Palestine Invitational.
Deskin’s time of 16:24.4 shattered the old mark of 16:47.5, set by Boardman’s Jake Lape.
Senior teammate Ryan Westfall was third as the Spartans easily held off second-place Poland, 27-77. Boardman’s top five runner finished in the top 11 and its next five finished between 16th and 24th.
Howland junior Aaron Sutton placed second, East Palestine’s David Chick was fourth and Poland’s Mike Kurjan was fifth.
Boardman sophomore Katie Heney placed second in the girls race and senior teammate Lauren Agnew was fifth, as the Spartans edged Waterloo in the team standings, 72-89.
Columbiana senior Stephanie Case placed first, Waterloo’s Annie Wise was third and Poland’s Anna Pompeo was fourth.
Salem girls, Chagrin Falls boys win
CHAMPION — Lauren Shivers finished second in 19 minutes, 25.6 seconds in leading Salem High School to the girls championship in the Ray Sweeney Invitional.
Ashtabula Edgewood’s Mallory Kreider (18:57.3) won the 5000-meter run.
The Quakers’ Lexi Shivers (20:45.2), Bethany Huston (21:03.2) and Alexis Thorne (21:06.4) placed fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.
Chagrin Falls put four runners in the top 10 as it took the boys title with 39 points. Salem was second with 89.
Jack Spilman (17:01.3) won the run. Drew Avsec (17:12.6) of Geneva was second and Ted Yuhaniak (17:17.7) of Salem finished third.
