Coaches vs. Cancer
YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown State men’s basketball program, in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, will participate in a community service project to benefit cancer research when it plays host to the inaugural Coaches vs. Cancer walk on Oct. 4, at the YSU track.
Registration is set at 9 a.m. and the 3-mile walk begins at 10 a.m.
The walk is open to anyone who wants to aid in the fight against cancer.

YOUNGSTOWN — Bill Castrovince, who has served as assistant sports director for WYTV Sports since 1998, has been promoted from weekend sports anchor to weekday sports anchor, announced New Vision Television of Youngstown.
Castrovince, a native of Euclid and a graduate of Ohio University, succeeds Bob Hannon who recently resigned as weekday sports anchor to assume the position of president and chief professional officer of the local United Way Chapter.
The change was effective last Tuesday.
Hannon previously had served as WYTV sports director.
Castrovince had been anchoring the weekend 33 sportscasts for about the last 10 years, while doing sports reporting during the week.

Liberty prevails, 82-71
NEW YORK — Janel McCarville scored 21 points and Cathrine Kraayeveld added 18 to lead the playoff-bound New York Liberty to an 82-71 victory over the Atlanta Dream on Friday night in the WNBA.
Lisa Willis had 12 points and Ashley Battle added nine for New York (17-12), which clinched its ninth postseason berth when Chicago lost at Connecticut earlier in the evening.
Betty Lennox had 28 points — including six 3-pointers — and seven rebounds for expansion Atlanta (3-28), which moved one loss away from tying the league record set by Chicago in its first season in 2006. Erika DeSouza and Katie Feenstra added 10 points each for the Dream.
Shock wins, 90-68
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Plenette Pierson scored 20 points and Deanna Nolan had 17 of her 19 points in the first half to help Detroit.
Kara Braxton scored 12 and rookie Alexis Hornbuckle added 10 as the Shock finished off a three-game season sweep of Indiana.
Tamika Catchings scored 20 and Ebony Hoffman added 12 for Indiana, which had their two-game winning streak snapped.
Pierson was returning from a four-game suspension.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. — Tamika Whitmore scored 17 points and Barbara Turner had eight of her 16 in the fourth quarter to help Connecticut.
The Sun (20-10) won their seventh straight game and moved a step closer to clinching the Eastern Conference regular-season title and home-court advantage throughout the conference playoffs.
Jia Perkins led Chicago (11-19) with 18 points, while Sylvia Fowles had 16 points and Candice Dupree had 13.
