Not enough evidence to prosecute in pony case

STAFF REPORT

SHARON, Pa. — The Mercer County District Attorney says there isn’t enough evidence right now to prosecute anyone for abusing and killing a pony in its pasture.

District Attorney Bob Kochems said Thursday the Mercer County Humane Society and state and local police have done an investigation that included exhuming the pony’s body and having an examination done at a school of veterinary medicine.

The humane society also provided information that allowed the police and the district attorney’s office to consult with veterinarians, and police have followed up on 20 potential leads, Kochems said.

The blind pony, named Kahluha, was found dead April 30 by its owner, Tory Morgan of Sharon, when she arrived to feed the animal at the pasture she leases on Bethel-New Wilmington Road. Four other horses in the pasture were not injured.

It appeared from Kahluha’s injuries that the pony, who was very gentle, had been dragged by a rope behind a vehicle, possibly an all-terrain vehicle, said Sandi Drabick, humane society director. The animal’s hind legs were broken.

Kochems said the case will stay open. He said people are encouraged to call the state police at (724) 662-6162 if they have any information. The society is offering an $8,000 reward for information that leads to a successful prosecution.
