GROVE CITY, Pa. — A woman who was struck then run over by a car at an Interstate 79 rest area remained in critical condition Wednesday at a Pittsburgh hospital.
Mary J. Strzelczyk, 70, of West Seneca, N.Y., was in the rest area at 3:07 p.m. Monday when she was hit by an out-of-control car, said state police in Mercer.
Police said Carol R. Brown, 66, of Rochester, N.Y., was trying to turn into a handicapped parking stall when the vehicle jumped the curb, accelerated over the sidewalk, hit a Boy Scout trailer, continued across a picnic area and then struck Strzelczyk, who was thrown into the air.
She landed in the grass, where she was run over. The car continued into a wooded area and came to rest in a ravine, police said.
Brown and a passenger were not injured, police said. They do not indicate if charges have been filed but said they are continuing to investigate the accident.
Strzelczyk was taken by helicopter to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
