Scrappers lose 8-5 to ‘Cutters

Mahoning Valley scored five times in the first inning, but never scored again.

NILES — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored five times in the first inning, but were shut out the rest of the way in an 8-5 loss to the Williamsport Crosscutters Wednesday at Eastwood Field.

Jeremy Tice hit a two-run homer and Zach Booker added a two-run double in the first, but the Scrappers couldn’t come up with anything more and committed five errors that led to their defeat.

Williamsport, which scored three times in the first inning behind a two-run homer by Jim Murphy, tied the game in the sixth inning, then added one run in the eight and two in the ninth.

Mahoning Valley finished with 11 hits, including two by Ryan Blair and two by Ramon Hernandez, but the errors accounted for three Williamsport runs.

The Crosscutters pounded out 15 hits, including four by Doug Morales.

Michael McGuire, the Scrappers fourth pitcher, suffered the loss.

The Scrappers announced Wednesday that their Player Development Contract with the Cleveland Indians has been extended for a period of two years, keeping the Scrappers affiliated with the Indians through the 2010 season.
