education reform

Governor’s guidelines

Gov. Ted Strickland said the mission of education reform in Ohio is to ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed, and reform should be guided by six basic principles:

We have to strengthen public schools to strengthen education.

There must be a connection between the education plan and the state’s economic prosperity.

Current education strengths must be recognized.

Great teachers can be a resource for both students and fellow educators.

Reform should develop specific, personalized educational programs identifying how each student best learns, and the system should be able to respond to teach to those abilities.

Testing and assessment will continue to answer the accountability question, but, most important, should help identify student strengths and weaknesses and allow the system to address them.
