GM boosts productivity with 2nd plant in India

TALEGAON, India — General Motors Corp. opened a second plant in India on Tuesday, boosting its production capacity in the country from 85,000 to 225,000 vehicles a year.

The $300 million factory is part of GM’s aggressive push into emerging markets. It also furthers the Indian government’s ambition to turn the country into a manufacturing hub for small vehicles.

“We believe India in three to four years will be a significant source of profit for us,” said GM Asia Pacific President Nick Reilly.

New Web site to sell goods with social goals in mind

NEW YORK — Most consumers probably associate eBay Inc. more with vintage lunch boxes and low-priced electronics than with laptop bags made from recycled plastic by women in New Delhi.

The online auction operator is trying to change that perception with WorldofGood.com, a Web site due to launch Wednesday to sell goods produced with social and environmental goals in mind.

EBay developed the site with World of Good Inc., a startup focused on “ethical supply chains” behind consumer products, and licensed the group’s name for the marketplace.
